The motherly arms of Craster harbour’s two whinstone piers hold a protective embrace. The resulting small cove shelters from the wild North Sea. It has welcomed Craster’s fishermen and their cobles for generations. Ramshackle stacks of lobster pots mirror the ragged silhouette of tumbledown Dunstanbugh Castle in the distance. Plucky oystercatchers peep support for their industrious colleagues, frantically strutting and prodding in the mud. The orange of their elongated beaks a close match for Middlerigg’s pantile roof that sits in contrast above its dark grey stone walls. Proudly, the house looks down at the boats resting at jaunty angles below, each one decorated with ropes strewn with oversized colourful plastic baubles. If Craster is the harbour, then the harbour is Middlerigg.

Family get together

Perfect location for a relaxing break. House was very well equipped with everything we needed for our week. Lovely decking area overlooking the harbour. Kipper shop across the road (can recommend the hot smoked salmon and pates) and pub just a few steps away. Although we didn't eat there, the menu looked good. Walk just over a mile to the north to Dunstanburgh Castle or south along the well maintained coastal path.

Relaxing week away from it all

Oughtershaw and Langstrothdale are such peaceful and beautiful places. The Reading Rooms is an idyllic spot right by Oughtershaw Beck and we spent our time just taking it all in. The beds in the house were a big hit with the whole party and along with the weather, contributed to the desire for long lie ins. One of us managed a few trips out on his bike - up and over Fleet Moss, down Langstrothdale to Cray and Buckden, round Beckermonds to Ling Gill and back to the house via the Pennine Bridalway. Otherwise it was short walks to 'Helen's House' at Yockenthwaite, picnics, Tuesday market at Hawes (with the amazing Hawes yarnbombers take on Wallace and Gromit), and the stunning waterfalls of West Burton.

Middlerigg is a fantastic place to kick back and relax. You don't really have to do much more than open the French doors on to the terrace and spend your holiday taking in the view. We spent a week there in August and had the type of weather you should not be expecting from a Northumberland summer. The renovation of the property is masterful - subtly combining the traditional feel of the original building with modern surfaces and appliances. No stone has been left unturned by the owners in seeking to provide you with everything you might need for a relaxing and stimulating holiday. We liked it so much, we booked for next year before we had finished with this one. We hope to be coming back for many years to come.

Value for money

We expected a high standard from the information supplied before booking. Our party arrived in 5 cars throughout Friday evening. As each group entered the door the look of amazement and delight at the layout and quality of the first room was a joy to behold. That look continued throughout the subsequent tour of the house. Every detail has been considered and executed to provide a quality result. I would recommend anyone to enjoy the space and comfort that this property can provide.
